Robida

Robida (‘Blackberry’) is a collective based in Topolò, a village in Friuli just across the border from Slovenia, publishing an eponymous magazine on culture and art, organising community actions and workshops, and exploring life on the margins in every sense. At Kino Otok, its members will seek inspirations for the upcoming issue of the magazine dedicated to ‘islands’. In their provisional studio, visitors can see an exhibition on Robida, and read old issues of the magazine and other publications.

27. 8., Lighthouse
Light in the Trees

An outdoor video gallery where tree trunks and driftwood turn into a platform for experimental films whose microscopic images of wood blur the distinction between the concrete and the abstract. Playing on the central screen, made of plastic debris, is the film Spirits, a meditative tribute to nature. The project has been developed by Uroš Marolt in years of creative exploration of unusual shapes in nature and creating sounds using materials found in a forest. The combined running time of the line-up of 9 films is 70 minutes.

Vili van Style pop-up shop

The first boutique shop on wheels in Slovenia, and a community striving to bring together young creatives from across the sector. The purpose of the project is to promote young local designers and decentralise access to their products. Featured designers include JKH identity, David Bacali, Ana Cajhen, Montango, and Gentle Power. Visitors will also have a chance to consult with designer and stylist Julia Kaja Hrovat, and watch video presentations by young designers.

25.–29. 8., Besenghi degli Ughi Palace
Dante Copiosus spatial installation

The installation commemorates the two preserved codices of the Divine Comedy with a commentary created by Pietro Campenni in Izola at the end of the 14th century. In addition to the history of the creation, dissemination and study of the Comedy, it offers Dante’s experience of traveling beyond. Installation by Stran 22, produced by PiNA as part of the RUK project, in cooperation with the Municipality of Izola, Self-governing Community of the Italian Nationality of Izola, Koper Music School and others. The investment is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund.

Visits are by appointment with Izola’s Tourist Information Centre only.

Živa Agrež: The Light and Colours of Tuscany

Painted impressions of a landscape hold a special allure, each moment conveying a different shade and appearance. For a fine example, see the works of Živa Agrež, an artist who captured her moments in Tuscany on canvas, and enter her colourful Tuscan world. Light and colours change the world around us. Organised by the Izola Centre for Culture, Sport, and Events.

Museum Izolana – the House of the Sea, Ulica Alme Vivode 3, Izola
Treasure trove of sea and fishing tales from Izola

The newly renovated museum is dedicated to the history of Izola, emphasising its maritime and seaside character through documentary photographs, videos and artefacts, as well as a VR presentation. Visitors can learn about ship model building, the history of fishing in Izola, and boat restoration from short documentaries made as part of a project co-funded from the Interreg Slovenia-Croatia programme. Organised by the Izola Tourist Information Centre.

Greetings from the Future III, exhibition by UNG School of Arts

Works by students of the School of Arts, University of Nova Gorica, made in the last three Covid-19 terms. The selection includes four photography series (mentors Ana Sluga and Tadej Žnidarčič) and a two-channel video installation (mentor Valerie Wolf Gang), in which pairs of students communicate through their works, confined to screens but staying in virtual touch.

Exhibition of paintings by Enzo Hrovatin

Local musician, composer, and painter Enzo Hrovatin is widely known as the singer and guitarist of the band Faraoni, and the author of award-winning songs. His painting style sits between abstraction and constructivism. This is Hrovatin’s first exhibition in several years.

‘Be Water’, exhibition by art association Tuba

On view in the gallery is a temporary exhibition by the art association Tuba, featuring works by Zdenka Petek, Katja Debevec, Danjela Bucaj Paradiž, Suzana Zorč, Barbara Rot, and Alenka Vodopivec.

Paride Di Stefano, Vianney Lefebvre, Sandra Kocjančič

On display in the gallery are paintings by the Italian and French artists, Paride Di Stefano and Vianney Lefebvre, and the permanent exhibition of jewellery by local artist Sandra Kocjančič, who challenges the boundaries of design by crocheting with wire.

Managed by the Insula Fine Artists Society, Insula Gallery exhibits works of member artists from the region, as well as other Slovenian and international artists.
